Introducing Our New OCIES Co-President: Associate Professor Cherie Chu-Fuluifaga

We are delighted to introduce Associate Professor Cherie Chu-Fuluifaga ONZM, recently appointed Co-President of the OCIES Executive Committee.

Cherie is an Associate Professor in Pacific education at the School of Education, Victoria University of Wellington, and has been a transformative figure in Pacific education for many years. Her leadership is grounded in Pacific-centred pedagogies that recognise and nurture the strengths, aspirations, and cultural identities of Pacific learners. A creative and forward-thinking educator, Cherie has developed Appreciative Pedagogy—a strengths-based approach that focuses on bringing out the best in people and communities.

Her research has led to real change across Aotearoa New Zealand’s education system, impacting early childhood education, compulsory schooling, adult education, and tertiary education. She is widely respected for her extensive knowledge of Pacific education and is regularly sought after by policy makers, NGOs, educational institutions, and practitioners for her deep expertise.

Cherie’s commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and building strong, reciprocal relationships with tangata whenua further reflects her inclusive and relational approach to leadership and scholarship. Colleagues describe her as thoughtful, loyal, well-prepared, and meticulous—always contributing with integrity, excellence, and a spirit of collaboration.

As OCIES Co-President, Cherie will play a key role in advancing our mission to foster meaningful research, dialogue, and partnerships within and beyond Oceania. We are excited to journey alongside her as we continue to strengthen and re-root comparative and international education in the region.
