Types of proposal
OCIES 2018 invites proposals that connect to the overall theme in either general or specific terms. Proposals can be submitted in the form of:
- Individual papers (can include two co-authors)
All individual papers (from one or two author/presenters) will be programmed according to topic with no more than three other individual papers in a 90-minute session. Each presenter should plan a 15 – 20 minute individual presentation (slideshows welcome but not necessary). Each paper session will have an assigned Chair who will moderate and keep presenters to their allocated time. Submissions should contain:
-
- 250-300 word abstract (setting out title, purpose or objectives, theoretical-conceptual perspectives, research approach, findings and conclusions/ implications).
- Names, institutional affiliation, and email addresses of author(s)/presenter(s).
- Panel discussions
Panel sessions provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion relating to a specific aspect of relationality in comparative, international and other education settings by a group of presenters who have developed the proposal together. A panel session will be allocated either 60 or 90 minutes depending on the number of presenters involved (3 for 60 min session, 4-5 for 90 mins). These sessions are to be facilitated by a nominated Chair and can include a Discussant. Proposals should include the following:
-
- Summary of up to 500 words describing the aspects of relationality in education, research and international development to be discussed, key questions to be addressed and how the session will be structured (title and 100-150 word descriptor for each panellist’s contribution).
- A list of the names and institutional affiliations of the nominated Chair, and up to 4 panelists and Discussant if included.
- Room set up requirements.
- Workshops
Workshops will be practical in approach and allocated a 60 minute session. Workshop proposals should include the following information:
-
- Summary of up to 500 words describing the rationale and objectives of the workshop, the target audience and planned workshop activities.
- A list of the names and institutional affiliations of the workshop facilitators.
- Details of any technical support, other than a standard computer and data projector, if needed.
- Room set up requirements.
- Tok stori/ Talanoa/ Roundtable
Tok stori/ Talanoa/Roundtable sessions are a new presentation format, designed to allow for maximum interaction among presenters and between presenters and attendees. We will consider two types of Tok stori/Talanoa/Roundtable proposals:
(i) A single-session Toks tori/Talanoa/Roundtable will be allocated 90 minutes and be chaired by the person submitting the proposal who will be knowledgeable about the focus of the session and who will have invited 4-6 presenters to participate. The chairperson will be responsible for facilitating interaction and participation throughout the session. Each presenter will be allocated 5-7 minutes to be followed by collective discussion between designated presenters and with other attendees. Single session roundtable proposals should include the following:
-
- A title/topic
- Preferred language for the session
- Summary of up to 300 words describing the purpose of the roundtable and the types of activities to be included
- The names, institutions/organisations and 100 words (approx.) about each presenter’s focus/approach
- Room set-up requirements
(ii) A multi-session Tok stori/Talanoa/Roundtable will be allocated two 90 minute sessions to allow for interlinked conversations around the same theme/topic. The same person may chair/mediate more than one of the linked tok stori/talanoa sessions or each may have a different chairperson. Chairpersons should be knowledgeable about the broad focus of the session(s) and the tok stori/talanoa process. The proposer/chairperson-mediator will be responsible for setting the conditions for participation and inviting participants. It is expected that as well as the stated number of participants who will address the topic, these sessions will be open to attendees, primarily there to listen and learn but who may be included in the tok stori/talanoa as the chair/mediator determines. Multi-session tok stori/talanoa/roundtable proposals should include the following:
-
- A title/theme/topic
- Number of 90 minute interlinked sessions requested (2 or 3)
- Preferred language(s) for the linked sessions
- Summary of up to 500 words describing the purpose and objectives of the multi-session tok stori/talanoa/roundtable, the sub-themes/topics and types of activities to be included and the process to be followed.
- For each interlinked session please include
- 100 words about the sub-topic/theme
- chairperson’s name
- number of invited participants
-
- Room set-up requirements.
