At the 2014 AGM of ANZCIES a decision was made to change the name of our regional society to one more representative of the region within which our society exists, and more inclusive of educationists from the many countries within Oceania. A subsequent survey of members’ views on the replacement name indicated a majority preference for OCIES, the Oceania Comparative and International Education Society.
Our 43rd annual conference in Vanuatu was the first held in an Oceanic location other than Australia or New Zealand. It was hosted by educationists at USP, Emalus, and was convened by a committee comprising members from the Universities of the South Pacific, Sydney and Auckland. The theme and sub- themes was developed to guide the reinvigoration of CIE in Oceania. They reflected the convening committee’s wish to revitalise our society by encompassing the diversity of issues, interests, perspectives and contexts represented in Oceania, and to both widen participation in and add depth to debates and dialogue about how CIE can contribute, theoretically and practically, to education in the post-2015 era.
This first conference under our new name was seen as a significant opportunity to listen to and learn from each other and explore the ways in which educational collaborations can contribute to positive social change.
